Frequently Asked Questions
What is this?
OtterPlans is a web application that allows you to create custom woodworking plans. You can select an object you want to build, visualize it in 3D, adjust its parameters and generate the plans in PDF format.
Is this only for wood ?
For now, yes, but we're thinking about adding other crafting materials like leather, fabric or metal in the future.
It is free?
Yes. The intention is to keep "small" plans always free. In the future, when the quality of the service allows it, complex plans may become paid.
Should I create an account?
No you can use OtterPlans without creating an account.
How does it work?
Plan definitions are loaded from the server and rendered in the browser. PDF generation is also done on the browser. Under the hood, the application uses Next.js, React, and Three.js with react-three-fiber.
Which browsers are supported ?
Modern 'evergreen' browsers. Handheld devices are not supported for now.
I'm a professional woodworker. Can I use OtterPlans to sell the furnitures I build ?
Yes. You have to make sure that the final render of the object you chose does not infringe third party rights such as registered designs, in your jurisdiction. However, our designs look like public domain or simple "common" items that should be safe to sell. Plans themselves are under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. For more informations, see the terms of service.
Is it open source?
No, but we are considering it. We may wait until the application is more mature.
I found a bug. What should I do?
Please report it here.
I have a suggestion. What should I do?
Please see here if it is already present. If yes you can vote for it, else you can create a new one.
Can I contribute?
You can help by reporting bugs and suggesting new plans or features (see above). Feedback is also valued and always appreciated! You can direct it via email at contact@otterplans.com
I would like to donate. How can I do that?
No donation process are in place, but you can send an email to contact@otterplans.com to express your interest.
Why it is called OtterPlans?
Otters are cute and loveable :) Also customization allows a lot of variations, so eventually this place may contains "All The Plans".
